Recently, I was invited by the lovely folk over at Good Housekeeping magazine to join them at their Cake Stars event, in celebration of their April issue which features South Africa’s top baking stars, their favourite recipes and expert baking tips.
The event was held at the fantastic kitchens of Chez Gourmet in Claremont, where one can participate in a number of short courses, or buy top brands of kitchen gadgets, decor & homeware. Any invitation to get in the kitchen with a bunch of enthusiastic food & lifestyle bloggers is right up my alley, so after an introduction from editor Sally Emery, we headed into the kitchen to get all caked up.
We separated into groups of three, and were positioned at four stations around the kitchen. We spent a short time at each station, where we got to make gorgeous chocolate ganache, silky meringue icing, pretty crystallized rose petals and decorative flowers, butterflies & hearts made from colourful plastic icing. All these delightful treats were not just made for fun, but to adorn a bounty of cupcakes that had already been baked off for us.
I teamed up with GHK editor Sally and Samantha Laura Kaye, a self-confessed baking fanatic & lifestyle blogger, and got stuck into all things confectionary. We had an absolute ball, and got covered in sticky meringue icing and food colouring.
Chez Gourmet also offer a catering service, which we got a taste of in the form of a beautiful high tea after our cupcake decorating antics. It was a fantastic day in the kitchen with Good Housekeeping, many thanks to everyone involved.
Be sure to enter the Cake Stars competition, where you could win a two-night stay for two people at the Table Bay Hotel and a full day’s internship with Cake Star Wade van der Merwe. The Good Housekeeping Cake Stars issue is on shelf now!
